Why did Jesus pray to God if He is God?

(Mark 14:32)

David K. Bernard who is one of the greatest “Oneness” writers of the 21th Century says in his book, The Oneness of God, "We must realize that, unlike any other human being, Jesus had two perfect and complete natures - humanity and deity. What would be absurd or impossible for an ordinary person is not so strange with Jesus. We do not say Jesus prayed to Himself, for this would incorrectly imply that the man was the same as the Spirit.

Rather, we say that the man prayed to the Spirit of God, while also recognizing that the Spirit dwelt in the man.

The choice is simple. Either Jesus as God prayed to the Father or Jesus as man prayed to the Father. If the former were true, then we have a form of subordination or Arianism in which one person in the Godhead is inferior to, not coequal with, another person in the Godhead. This contradicts the biblical concept of the one God, the full deity of Jesus, and the omnipotence of God. If the second alternative is correct, and we believe that it is, then no distinction of persons in the Godhead exists. The only distinction is between humanity and deity, not between God and God.”

David K. Bernard, The Oneness of God, rev. ed. (Hazelwood, Mo.: Word Aflame Press, 2000), 177-78.

Jesus prayed to God, first as an example. Jesus was the perfect example of how men should pray. All flesh, even the flesh of Jesus had to pray to God (The Heavenly Spirit - Deity). There are many instances where Jesus would give respect to his own Spirit through prayer.

Therefore, this scripture doesn’t seem strange to a believer in the oneness of God. Now don’t forget, Jesus would do things, not for himself, but for us. We should follow Jesus and his actions concerning the Deity/heavenly Spirit of God. This includes praying to God out of our humanity.

  1. That is such hogwash! There is no trinity mentioned in the Bible. It was invented by the Catholics for whatever reason, and I cannot believe that people still follow that ridiculous assumption when it obviously is not true.

    1. If you would read the book, "Understanding the Trinity" by Will Daniels, you will understand what is being said about the Trinity without making assumptions.

  2. The Bible may not specifically use the word "Trinity", but the Bible does have the concept. In Genesis, where God says "Let us make man in our image..". Who was God talking to? Also, He said "our image". The Trinity refers to God the Father (Yahweh), Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. I think people get hung up on the word God, which is not His name, it's more like a title.

  3. Dear Anon,

In the Bible one must seek truth and not manmade concepts. Your concerns about the Trinity vs the Oneness of God are answered in the book, "Understanding the Trinity" by Will Daniels. Read it before giving traditional and uneducated answers about the Deity of Jesus Christ (Yahweh) and the oneness of God.

  4. You notice the all the haters in there given replies state of things being baloney and hogwash are of the ilk that seem to make light of others given faith in things that stand alone in mystery, but to those unable to comprehend the mystery in God, it would be suggestive that you purge yourself of the conspiracy behind everything attitude, purge yourself of the myth stories that predate Christianity that far from fit the bill and get in where you can fit in instead of posting your little venomous comments and childish whining maybe reading and studying the Bible for its life changing lessons, God bless you

  7. Just a note to Anonymous who wrote that God said "Let us" to prove the trinity concept:

The person who says "Let us" or "Let's" is not the same person as those to whom he/she is speaking. It's like if I,Junior, say to John,"Let us go here",it's Junior telling John something and not Junior telling himself something. Junior and John are different persons. So in the context of Genesis, Junior says to John "Let us" is the same as God Himself telling whomever "Let us"

  8. An interesting subject regarding the scripture about "Let us", In the book of Isaiah Ch6:8 God says, "Whom shall I send and who will go for us?" Job 38:7 "When the morning stars sang together and the sons of God sang for joy?" Having studied these verses and the chapters, the angels of God were present...The angels were present at the creation and they minister to the heirs of salvation....The angels know the blueprint of the human body...not that they created it....think of God as the surgeon and the angels as the helpers or surgical assistents.....The book of Daniel speaks of an angel strengthening him as well as Jesus in His human nature.....Let us and whom shall go for us is not explaining a plurality of the Godhead but rather speaking of the heavenly hosts....It easy to see...we know that demons can afflict the body in specific ways...how is that? they have to know something about how its made...obviously they cant read our minds but know how to put thoughts in them..
